I have a medsurg test in the morning… “studying my ass off” just doesn’t quite seem to hit the mark right now… “studying my FRIGGIN’ ass off” gets closer, but no cigar…

Look what I can do!

Anyhow, this week has been another uppity-up week for me. Mental Health and MedSurg clinicals went well. I am learning so much from the mental health clinicals… learning about people and about myself. It’s amazing how much I’m actually learning about myself. Some of the realizations aren’t pretty, but as long as they help me develop into a better person, I’m all for it.

The mental health experience is also helping me with the hospital clinical setting. We all learned that our care should be “patient-centered,” yet I think we can get too caught up in the “gotta do skills” part of nursing. When it comes down to it, patients remember who cared for them the most… patients remember which nurses took care of the PATIENT, not the nurse that was able to hang an IV bag or something properly. Now, I’m not saying that it’s not important to be able to do the skills part of nursing… I’m just saying that as students, if we get too caught up in the doing, we come more task-oriented instead of patient-oriented. I hope that makes sense.

Of course, the best thing would be to have a balance between the two. Maybe I’m unbalanced in my approach right now as well… I guess that’s why I’m in school, huh?

It’s gonna be a loooong night for Tommy.
